How to Create a Household Budget
Posted by: | CommentsThe “B” word sends a shudder down the spine of many people. It conjures up fears of never being able to do anything with their money. That it is somehow locked up in this budget and cannot be used for anything else. That in fact is not the case. A household budget is simply a way to see where all your money is going. And more importantly to give you a plan that tells your money what it is supposed to be doing, whether that’s paying bills, going into savings or retirement accounts, or to buy groceries.
Every successful business or person has a money plan. This is what a budget is, a plan for your money, telling it what to do instead of it telling you what to do. With a budget you can set and achieve your financial goals. You can also get a better view of what your money can do for you now and in the future.
With a household budget you can create a spending and savings plan that puts aside a certain amount of money each month for known and unexpected expenses. It will also give you a good record of your monthly expenses based on each month’s expenditures.
The first thing you need to do when setting up a budget is figure out what your monthly income is. If you have a salaried job this is easy because it is a set amount each pay period. If you work on commissions or are self employed this may be more of an estimate. Write this number down at the top of your budget sheet.
Now comes the fun part. Start writing down all your monthly expenses and include even the smallest of expenses. There are certain fixed expenses such as mortgage, car payments, insurance that you need to make every month. You will also need to track those expenses that are more fluid, such as groceries, gasoline, clothing, and entertainment.
If you start by subtracting your fixed expenses from your income what you are left with needs to be budgeted to pay for those expenses that seem to change from month to month. Once you are done allocating money to all your expenses what you are left with is either a positive or negative cash flow. The nice thing about a budget is you can quickly scan what you have written down and see exactly where the money is going. This is very helpful if you are living pay check to pay check because chances are you can find some areas that you can easily cut back on or do without to leave you with extra cash at the end of every month.
Here are four quick tips to help get your budget on track.
1. Learn money management – Successfully dealing with money is 80% behavior. Most people work for their money instead of having their money work for them.
2. Make a plan – A budget is a money plan. Most people would never dream of building a house without a plan. In fact most every activity in life involves some sort of plan. But our most important asset, our money, is left plan free and when we run out or are weighed down with debt we don’t know why.
3. Needs and Want – Know the difference. Needs are basic things like a home with a roof, groceries, clothes (in moderation), transportation to get to work. You don’t need a $400 plus car payment to get to work or a pair of $100 designer jeans. You may want them but you don’t need them.
4. Be a little frugal – This doesn’t mean live in a cave. You can still have fun but make sure it fits into you budget.
Creating a household budget is the first step to getting your finances under control. You will have to be patient with the process because chances are it will not work the first 2 to 3 months you do it. But remain diligent and around the third month you will begin to see patterns that will help you refine your budget into a financial plan that will set you on the right path.

Cheap Birthday Party Ideas
Posted by: | CommentsBirthday parties have somehow evolved to out of controlled expenditures with great efforts to rival celebrations at any age level. One often wonders if the party was designed to entertainment the parents rather than the children in attendance. This certainly does not have to be the case and I assure you the birthday child will feel just as special, if not more so with a traditional party that targets fun rather than expense. Here are some suggestions for throwing an inexpensive birthday party that will impress parents and children alike.
The best parties are those at which there is plenty to do and everyone feels a part of the celebration, with the birthday boy or girl at the center of attention. A return to these basics will insure pleasant memories all around.
To begin with, set a theme for your party or just have a traditional party with games and cake. Select birthday invitations that include all the necessary information such as date, time and location address with your phone number. These can be hand delivered or mailed. It is best to make sure they get directly to the parent. Do not hand them out at school unless you are inviting everyone in the class.
Before parents rented party venues, inflatables, ponies and clowns, parties were thrown at individual homes with parents and family members pitching in to help. Simple crafts and games kept the party jumping before presents were opened and cake and ice cream consumed. The birthday girl or boy was pleased, guests left happy and parents were left with no bills to pay.
Begin with simple crafts to keep everyone engaged and happy while waiting for others to arrive. Children can make their own birthday party hats and goodie bags. Have them decorate precut hat shapes with crayons and stickers, then staple them together and add an elastic band. Goodie bags can begin as plain brown lunch bags. Inexpensive prizes from games played can be collected in them.
Simple and timeless games like musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey, go fish or a bean bag toss can be enjoyed by all. Easy to create and inexpensive, the children will enjoy the games and parents can easily manage and enjoy the laughter that comes with them. Prizes can be inexpensive and put in their goody bags. At the end of each game, make sure everyone gets a prize for competing and being a good sport.
A home made paper mache piñata is great fun and inexpensive to make. Let the birthday girl or boy help design and paint it and fill it with bulk candy beforehand. Take it outside for everyone to have a whack at it. This loot too can be put in their goody bags.
At gift opening time, put a gift in each child\’s hands and pass them to the right while music plays. Once the music stops, the birthday child opens the birthday cards and gift he or she is holding or the one nearest to him or her. Repeat until all the presents are opened.
Next up is cake, singing and candle blowing. A home made cake is simple enough with boxed mixes and pre-made frosting. Or individual cupcakes can be fun too. Add a scoop of ice cream and small cups of juice and enjoy.
For a final wrap up as you wait for parents to arrive, play a game of charades until all the guests have departed. With goody bags already in hand everyone leaves happy. Simple and traditional, hold the party outside if weather permits. Make sure the birthday party invitations specify an end time and relax. You\’ve done your best knowing that each year the party will get a bit easier and your child a bit older and more independent!

Cheap Meal Ideas – 3 Alternatives to Fast Food
Posted by: | CommentsSociety today is very tired and overworked. Everyone is busy and running at a fast pace each day. It does not matter what the reason is for the hectic pace of your lifestyle, your time is precious and needs to be managed effectively. You need cheap meal ideas to help you stretch your time and money while still providing a wholesome and nutritious dinner for you and your family.
The fast food makers know how little time we have and use this very thing to make themselves successful. The idea of coming home after a long day at work and cooking for four or five people is not something we tend to look forward to on top of preparing for the next day and trying to get the homework done. This is why they offer you cheap meal ideas that require no cleaning, no cooking, and only 25 minutes to pick up.
Mothers and fathers are the first to take a run to the drive through to avoid the hassles of grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning up after dinner so they can go home and relax a bit before they need to wake up and do it all over again. The problem with this is that eating so much fast food will inevitably cause obesity and is not the healthiest choice to consider. There are some very cheap meal ideas that take almost no time to prepare and will make coming home to a good meal more bearable.
The first cheap meal idea includes meat, vegetables, and pasta or rice all in one dish. To make a quick stir fry, begin with some thin slices of meat. Beef is good and chicken will also work. Add a modest amount of soy sauce to the meat. Cook until done completely. In the same pan, add a bag of stir fry vegetables to the mix. Add a cup of water to the mix as the vegetables are heating to make a sauce of sorts. While the meat and vegetables are cooking, get out a bag or two of the boil in bag rice. Let this cook as the rest is heating. When the rice is complete, put a helping on each plate and cover with the stir fry vegetables and meat. Not only is this a cheap meal idea, it is also fast; it can be made in only 20 minutes.
You can whip up a hearty batch of pancakes and scrambled eggs for the family in about 30 minutes or less. If you think it is strange to eat breakfast food for dinner, consider how these same foods give you what you need to go through an entire day. Another one of the cheap meal ideas to try is a simple macaroni and cheese with meat dish. The ground beef or turkey only takes 20 minutes to cook through and the macaroni and cheese can be finished before the meat is. For an added flavor, add one small can of tomato sauce for a tomato macaroni dish.
When you fix one of these or other cheap meal ideas at home, you are taking time out of your busy day to treat yourself and your family special.
