Morning Sickness and its Treatments
Posted by: | Comments
Morning sickness or NVP (nausea and vomiting in pregnancy) is an unwelcome but perfectly normal part of pregnancy. It doesn’t ii any way put your baby at increased risk. In fact the reverse is true – morning sickness signifies the hormonal changes necessary to be a mother are taking place, and a woman suffering morning sickness is less likely to miscarry. About half of pregnant women experience both nausea and vomiting, and just under one third experience nausea without vomiting.
Morning sickness or NVP is sometimes trivialised as a minor inconvenience of pregnancy, but it can have a significant, adverse effect on day-to-day activities and quality of life. The support of friends and family can help a person to cope. Fortunately, for most women, the nausea ceases after the first three months of pregnancy. For a few however, it can continue right through pregnancy.
The actual causes of nausea and vomiting are not known for sure but seem to be related to the hormonal changes. During pregnancy, oestrogen levels rise and tend to be at their highest during the first three months when the symptoms of NVP are at their worst.Morning sickness is a condition that affects 85 plus percent of pregnant women. Knowing if you actually have it can be difficult sometimes. There are some women affected by it in the morning, and there are some that are affected by it in the afternoon and at night. If some can have symptoms in the afternoon and at night, then I’m sure you are wondering why it’s called morning sickness. It’s something that every women wonders at some point during their pregnancy, but it’s not easily explained.
Are you not even sure that what you are experiencing is even morning sickness, especially since it’s not happening in the morning? In this article, we’ll run down some of the symptoms and statistics to give you a better idea of what’s going on with you and whether it’s normal for it to be happening. The first symptom, of course, is nausea. It can be a little difficult to determine if you have some sort of bug or if it is morning sickness. Generally, if you have it for a couple of days in a row, certain smells or foods trigger it, and you don’t have a fever, it is probably it.
The symptom that goes along with the nausea is vomiting. The vomiting associated with morning sickness can also be hard to determine if it’s because of that, or some other food-related illness. Again, if it is set off by certain foods or smells, then you are probably experiencing it.First of all this morning sickness is not a disease, it is a normal sickness that could visit pregnant women in their first trimester of pregnancy. People call it morning sickness because most of the time it came by in the morning; I used the word “most of the time” above because it is actually not always happen in the morning, it can come anytime of the day.
Morning sickness is actually the nausea and vomiting that related to pregnancy. As mentioned above, some pregnant women might not just experience the worst of these symptoms in the morning then calm down as the day progress, but it can be on the blink at any time of the day and last for all day long.Whenever bringing new life into the world, the female body experiences and survives many changes. Some women experience an enchanted pregnancy and have no problems with morning sickness whatsoever. Some do not. For the lesser fortunate, there are morning sickness remedies to provide comfort.
If you awake nauseous in the morning, it may be hard to get started. Sometimes, thankfully, the nausea doesn’t come immediately. This gives you time to get out and walk. A brisk walk can get your metabolism worked up to a point that morning sickness doesn’t bother you. Even if you are not up to a long walk, don’t lie in the bed awake. That will only make the sick feelings more pronounced.
Treatments
Eat cold foods because they are less apt to cause nausea than hot ones. This doesn’t mean that everything must be as cold as ice cream, only that foods straight from the oven may cause feelings of sickness.During pregnancy, one of the most common symptoms that most of us face is Morning sickness, which refers to nausea and vomiting experienced in the early stages of pregnancy. Though most women are able to handle it, in case of some new mothers to be, it is a difficult symptom that only seems to get worse.Morning sickness is a common symptom during the initial stage of pregnancy that is the first three months of pregnancy. Nearly 70% of pregnant women feel nauseated during morning and night for the first three months. Morning sickness starts to show after the fourth week of pregnancy. In most cases, it tends to get over at the end of three months but in some cases the nausea may continue throughout pregnancy.
In spite of the fact that the name says ‘morning sickness’, the nausea can continue throughout the day and not restrict itself to the morning. The moment you get up, you may find nausea overcoming you and this might continue till the end of the day.During early pregnancy, you may develop an aversion to certain odors. This is a part of morning sickness. Avoid these smells whenever possible. If your husband loves bacon and eggs in the morning, you may not care at all for the smell during your first couple of months of pregnancy. Let him go somewhere else to get his bacon and eggs for the time being.
During your early days of your pregnancy, a miscarriage can occur from using certain medications. For this reason, you should be cautious about using anything for your morning sickness other than home remedies, and even then they should be approved by your physician.Figuring out the cause would be nice because then women wouldn’t have to endure these symptoms, and they could just enjoy their pregnancies. Until that time, there are treatment options available to keep the nausea and vomiting at bay. Acupuncture, acupressure, and herbal are just a few of the treatment options available.
With any luck, you will be fortunate enough to be one of the approximately 50 percent who is free from the nausea and vomiting by the end of your first trimester. There are some who carry these symptoms along with them for the whole pregnancy; right up until their baby is born. There is one type of morning sickness that fall into severe section, it called hyperemesis gracidarum which can be described as excessive nausea and excessive vomiting that disturb the absorption of food and liquid. This hyperemesis gracidarum is one of the thing responsible on the weight drop and the women become dehydrated. (rule of thumb: do consult your doctor whenever you loss weight during your pregnancy)
The precise cause of the morning sickness is still not really figure out yet; Researchers suggest that the cause has something to do with the changing hormone levels which are produced after the woman has conceived, within her body.In cases of severe dehydration it may ne necessary to be hospitalised so that fluid and nutrients can be replaced via a drip. Some women find that the constant nausea and vomiting leaves them so tired and debilitated that they cannot leave the house or do anything much at all. In these cases also, it may be necessary to seek a doctor’s advice. He may, on rare occasions prescribe an anti-emetic but drugs are generally withheld as much as possible during pregnancy to avoid any risk to the developing baby.

I Love my Teddy Bear! By Paul Lakeman of Funkybears
Posted by: | Comments
Everyone loves a Teddy Bear. Most of us grew up with the adorable stuffed animal. Have you ever wondered about the history of the cuddly Teddy Bear? A little more than a century ago, the story goes that President Theodore Roosevelt was in Mississippi to settle a border dispute. Roosevelt loved to bear hunt and was attempting to do so while settling the dispute. When no bears could be found, the President’s host found a baby bear but Roosevelt refused to shoot the animal. Of course, President Roosevelt could not hurt such a loveable, helpless captive target. Newspapers got a hold of the story and printed a cartoon depicting the President with a baby bear. The caption read, Teddy’s Bear. The cartoon was reprinted across the nation and the Teddy Bear was born.
When we were little, most of us have gotten some form of a teddy bear that we would hold when we went to sleep. Teddy Bears are so cute and cuddly and provide comfort. Best of all they are given as a gift of love. As we have grown up, the Teddy Bear remains a strong sentimental part of our childhood.
We give the stuffed animal to our girlfriends/boyfriends, husbands/wives, friends, and children. Teddy Bears last longer than flowers and they are so warm and cozy. One reason we love them is that they remind us of the person that gave them to us. The Teddy Bear reminds us that the giver of the bear wants to hold us and hug us all the time.
Another reason we love them is that they remind us of a pleasant time in our childhood. They bring out the little boy or little girl in all of us. They seem to be one of the few things that have managed to keep their innocence. Teddy Bears are cheery and so sweet and no matter how old we get we just don’t seem to grow old enough to want to get rid of them.
We love that furry feeling against us and they are nice to talk to when we go to sleep. They also make us feel secure and when we need to hold someone, they provide us with that comfort. There are many reasons we love our Teddy Bears and they are a gift that everyone can love.
Not only is the Teddy Bear a gift for all of us regardless of age, it is also a great gift for any occasion. Some deliver a message of love, some friendship, and some wish us to get well soon. Teddy Bears can be customised to fit any need. You can outfit them in almost any type of clothes and lavish them with all types of accessories.
You can have a standard size Teddy Bear, a monkey bear, in fact there’s a Bear for everyone! Teddy Bears are popular gifts for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, and so much more. They really are suitable for any age, gender, or occasion. I love my Teddy Bear! Don’t be afraid to admit it; I know you do too!
Medical (mis) Mangement of Mastitis
Posted by: | Comments
This article deals with severe mastitis requiring medical treatment. In my work as a maternity expert and Naturopath I recently had an alarming consultation with a young mother. The consultation with this Mamma went a little like this: “Can you tell me how to wean my 4 month old baby?” I kind of got the feeling that she didn’t really want to talk about it, just wanted the info. I got half way through the sentence “It depends on the reason you need to wean” and was cut off by her hurriedly asking “Should I go cold turkey or do it slowly”? I answer the question telling her that it needs to be done as slowly as possible since sudden weaning will cause blocked ducts and mastitis. She then tells me that is the very reason she needs to wean. She became teary and said that she keeps getting mastitis and has made the decision to wean so that she is doing her best for her baby. She feels she can’t look after him properly if she is sick.
I ask how many times she has had mastitis and she tells me twice in the last month. She then said it was her Doctor who told her that weaning is the best way to prevent her from getting mastitis again. Hmmm…… I get the feeling this Doctor does not know much about breastfeeding management.
We continue…
Me: “Do you remember how long you had the antibiotics for when you got mastitis the first time”?Her: “Not long, I think it was 5 days”.Me: “Do you know what antibiotic you were given?”Her: “I’m not sure, he said it was a low dose of penicillin, he said we should try that first and if it doesn’t work to try something stronger”.
I suggested as delicately as possible that she find a Doctor who has some training in breastfeeding management. She tells me she has been seeing this Doctor for a long time and trusts him.
Even as a naturopath I recognise that if the infection is so severe that Mum has fevers and is vomiting as this Mamma was, she will probably need antibiotic treatment. You’ve got to get rid of the infection as quickly as possible and deal with it thoroughly. There are certainly natural therapies that we can use to treat mastitis, but once I see a vomiting, feverish mother, I would never wait to see if the infection will respond to herbs, nutritional therapies or homeopathics.
However I have several major problems with the way this Mum was treated by this Doctor. In the full length version of this article at my blog http://www.naturaltransition.com/blog/ I go into more detail about what the issues are that I have. In the interests of expediency I have edited this article for easier reading.
So here’s my advice for a feverish, vomiting Mamma with severe mastitis.
1. Never, ever stop breastfeeding while you have mastitis or blocked ducts. Never… ever… ever. You are just giving the bacteria time to breed as well as providing the little suckers with the perfect medium for growth. Even while you have a really bad active infection and are expressing lumpy discoloured milk, it is still absolutely 100% safe to breastfeed your baby.
If you have blocked ducts that have turned into mastitis: Continue to follow these management guidelines until they are gone. This will help resolve the infection more quickly.
2. Between feeds use a cold pack to relieve swelling and pain. You can fill a zip lock bag with rice or lentils and put it in the freezer for a quick homemade cold pack. Don’t use it directly against the skin. If engorgement is a problem you can use cold cabbage leaves, but don’t use them for too long as they are really effective at reducing supply.
3. Go and see your doctor – If you have a favourite and trust them; great but don’t be afraid to question the wisdom of their prescription. If possible, find a GP who keeps up to date with breastfeeding management. If you can’t access a Doctor who specialises in women’s health, I recommend asking for a women who has children of her own. They are more likely to know about breastfeeding than a 60 year old man.
4. To help maintain balance in your digestive system while taking antibiotics you can take a supplement of Saccharomyces boulardii (SB). This is a probiotic which is related to brewer’s yeast and is naturally resistant to antibiotics. Other probiotics such as acidophilus will be killed off by the antibiotic you are taking. In USA and Europe SB is sold over the counter in health food stores to prevent traveller’s diarrhoea. In Australia, there are several companies that sell it as a practitioner only product, so you will need to get it from a naturopath or GP. Many health food stores and pharmacies have a naturopath on site who will be able to supply it for you.
5. Rest, drink plenty of fluids and take care of yourself!
6. See an IBLC lactation consultant if you get more than one bout of mastitis. She will be able to work with you to resolve any issues causing the infection.
Rochelle Drum Fashion Industry Executive Launches Babychix, Inc
Posted by: | Comments
When Rochelle Drumm was just five years old she would excitedly come home from school and recite to her mother what everyone she had seen that day was wearing. She knew every last detail down to the stitch. Even at such a young age she knew she had to make fashion her future no matter how hard she had to work.
Becoming a fashion executive for a nationally recognized corporation seemed to be where Rochelle’s future had led her. She had finally made it. Her life was everything she had wanted and more. The fashion industry was the essence of Rochelle. During her career she traveled the world learning about people of all ages and their different styles and taste, from north to south and every where in between. London, Paris, Germany, and Italy, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Greece, and Tortola, the Bahamas, Canada, the Caribbean, Ixtapa, and Costa Rica are just a small selection of Rochelle’s broad travels.
After all the freedom and independence Rochelle had experienced, and all that she had learned in her years in the business world, she felt something was missing. After trying for more than two years to get pregnant, and going through numerous treatments, many emotions and some guilt and sadness, she had come to terms that her journey would be a different one than she’d expected. It would involve helping children and making a difference for their future. This was her destiny and Rochelle was happy with this. At 38 years old she decided that she wanted to own her own business. A business where she could be creative and use the skills she had harvested over the years as well as her passion for cooking, fashion, and children. She wanted to put the creative process and the ability to develop a successful business to fusion and create something that could give back to people and make a difference in their lives.
Rochelle wanted to build a national brand that could become a household name not only for Mom’s but also for children. She wanted her products to be affordable to everyone. To be able to partner with different children’s organizations and help bring awareness to various causes that need additional funding and volunteers. To become an advocate and speaker for Foster Care and increase the awareness for those who are looking to adopt. All this can and would be possible with the launching of her business “babychix”.
Rochelle began to develop “babychix” in 2002 while still working as an executive in the fashion industry. For many years her mother had been a creative force in her life. It was her original paraffin diaper that gave Rochelle the idea to develop something fun and functional that could be used for floral arrangements, gift baskets, snacks, q-tips and other items in a nursery. It took several years to find the right partners and samples plus the process to patent the keepsake diaper shaped container. “babychix” is a registered trademark and each character was designed to reflect the personalities of Rochelle’s niece and nephews.
In addition to her creativity and unique array of products, Rochelle wants to use her business to benefit and help children all over the world. A portion of the sales from “babychix” will be donated accordingly to h.o.p.e. = happiness, opportunity, peace and education. This organization brings hope to the world through education, disease control and medical training and care.
By creating this brand and launching “babychix”, Rochelle created a business where she can be in charge of her own destiny while helping children in need. As Rochelle would say, “Children do not have a choice as to when they come in to this world, who their parents are, their social class or even if they will be healthy. It’s our responsibility to provide all children with the love, support, care and means to live the best life they can no matter the hand they are dealt”.

Eyebrows are a natural frame for the eyes and should be in proportion to the face. Perfectly shaped eyebrows will enhance the look of your eyes, your face and will accentuate your makeup while; ill kept, unruly eyebrows will hide the beauty of your eyes. Eyebrow threading sounds very painful, but is about the same as brow waxing and is not hard on your skin. Threading your eyebrows gives you a better result than waxing or plucking because it pulls an entire row of hair from the follicle to achieve a more straight-looking line of hair. Threading is an ancient form of hair removal used in Israel and the Middle East and is becoming increasingly popular in urban centers such as New York , London , Paris and Sydney . Extremely precise, it boasts the same long lasting results as tweezing and waxing (with less pain, say some eyebrow shaping veterans).
Threading is done in salons with one simple tool. This tool is a piece of one hundred percent cotton thread. One end of the thread is held between the teeth or is anchored around the neck of the beautician and the other end is held firmly with the left hand. The index and middle fingers of the right hand then form a loop in the center of the string. Some beauticians will apply baby powder to the eyebrows before they begin. The baby powder will absorb any oils around the hair follicles that may cause the hairs to slip from the thread as it is pulled. The thread is then rolled over the surface of the skin collecting the hairs as it moves. The thread is then used to lift the hairs out by the root. This procedure does involve a small amount of pain. The amount of pain will vary from person to person. Many people find that this is the best way to get a great arch to their eyebrow. Because threading is so effective in removing even baby find hairs, make up goes on much smoother.
Steps of Perfect Eyebrow Shape
1.The perfect eyebrow starts above the inside corner of your eye (over the tear duct), and ends at the outside corner, above your eyelashes.
2. Trim your eyebrows. This will make a big difference in helping you look younger. Once eyebrows reach a certain length they start losing pigments at the ends.
3. Take an eyeliner pencil and place it vertically against your nose. It should run from the side of the nose, mid-mouth, and by the tear duct of the eye. This is wear your eyebrow should start; any hair that is visible beyond the pencil should be tweezed.
4. Next place the pencil diagonally where it should hit the middle of the mouth, nostril, and outside the iris of the eye. This is wear your arch is. Tweeze a gradually line from the arch to the start of the eyebrow.
5. Determine the end of the eyebrow, place the pencil diagonally across to his the opposite corners of the mouth, nostril, and outside corner of the eye. Any hair that goes past should be tweezed.
6. Place your pencil horizontal from the start of the eyebrow to the end of the eyebrow. The pencil should create a perfect straight line.
8. The biggest mistake people make is to tweeze too much. Avoid overplucking as it can take months for brows to grow back. Here’s a simple trick to remember:
9.Brow shade should be about two shades lighter than hair color for olive or dark skinned women and two shades darker than hair color blondes or women with grey hair.
A History of Gift Baskets
Posted by: | Comments
Gift baskets date back to biblical times. There is the story of the Egyptian Royal Family that finds a gift in a basket, which was baby Moses hidden in the rushes. And there are the three wise men bringing baskets of gifts after the birth of Jesus.
In the middle ages, gift giving played an important role. Kings received baskets filled with gifts, such as gold, silver and jewels. Gifts of food for impressive medieval feasts were transported in baskets.Historically gather’s used baskets for gathering food and hunters used them to store or pack out their daily catch. Baskets were woven with materials that could be found locally.
Colonial times saw a simple time. The first American gift basket was traced back to the Native Americans, greeting colonists with baskets of food from their gardens. The baskets were crafted with simple materials or wooden boxes. These baskets became a way to share their plentiful supplies of good with others.
In the nineteenth century, with the railroad system, this allowed them to send gift baskets further distances.
Baskets have not only been used for gift baskets. For centuries they were used to carry eggs from the chicken coop to the house, harvest vegetables from the garden to the house. Baskets were also used as saddle bags on horses, donkeys and mules to carry supplies and sometimes even people.
Many Native American Tribes are famous for their basket making. Most baskets are handmade even today. Even with the industrial age, baskets making is hard to do using machinery, the baskets need the same hand crafting that has been used throughout time.
Gift baskets are unique because of the care and time and special attention that goes into making them so lovely to give and receive.
Today, the gift basket giving goes on with so many themes to choose from. A gift basket can be personalized to that special someone needs.

Essence of Sleep-Some Useful Tips
Posted by: | Comments
When was the last time you slept like a baby? When was the last time you woke up fully rejuvenated after a sound siesta? You don’t remember?
That’s the problem majority of us are facing in this fast paced world. Although we generally tend to neglect the essence of a good night’s sleep, it is as important as exercising and having the right kind of food.
Children, who do not nap properly at night, end up being inattentive in school, thus leading to poor performance. The National Sleep Foundation has recently reported that even babies are snoozing an average of 90 minutes less than the recommended 14 hours of snooze a day. Another study by the University of British Columbia found that failing to get enough snooze or napping at odd hours heightens the risk for a variety of major illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
Can you now see a direct link between the growing problem of obesity and sleeplessness? When you don’t get enough nap at night, you tend to get up late in the morning. This might lead to a rushed breakfast (which is the most important meal of the day) or force you to eat a quick bite of junk food (junk food does nothing more than adding extra layers of fat in the body). This just makes things worse: poor eating habits, and unhealthy morning meals; the result: a nation which is sprawling towards obesity.
Moreover, after a not so good night’s nap, you would generally wake up feeling irritated or cranky. This might make you unapproachable to others. A foul mood would also inhibit your brain from being energetic or enthusiastic about any kind of activity or work.
Is there a way to improve this condition? The answer is yes.
Try taking a warm bath before going to bed. This will relax your body and mind to a great extent. You can also use aromatherapy essential oils for relaxation. Try making exercise a habit. You need not hit the gym everyday for it. Walking is the best and the most economical form of exercising. Music comes to rescue for many who are fond of it. Put on some soothing music and let it comfort you to the extent for sleepiness. Avoid consumption of caffeine before going to bed. Avoid alcohol and smoking before bedtime.
Diabetes Symptoms- Knowing the Types of Diabetes
Posted by: | Comments
Diabetes is a condition featuring unusually high levels of glucose in the bloodstream. Insulin, produced by the pancreas, is used by the body to lower blood glucose levels. If someone’s pancreas doesn’t generate enough insulin, their body will develop diabetes.
A short list of symptoms of diabetes would include severe hunger and thirst, more urge to urinate, and fatigue. But the surest way of knowing whether you have diabetes is having a blood sugar test, also known as a Glucose Tolerance Test.
Type 1 diabetes is the more acute form. It is typically treated with special dietary restrictions, exercise and occasionally with insulin. Type 1 diabetes usually will be treated with special diet, exercise, and a weight loss plan before insulin is added. This form of diabetes is considered an insulin dependent disease.
A less severe form of diabetes, Type 2 diabetes is first treated with a diabetic diet,
exercise and weight loss. If theses measures are not successful in controlling blood sugar and insulin levels, oral medications may be added. Insulin is then finally considered if these also are unsuccessful. Type 2 diabetes normally occurs in adults who are middle age or older, which is why it is sometimes called Late-Onset Diabetes In this case, he pancreas still produces the right levels of insulin but the body has become resistant to it.
It is feasible to delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes if it runs in the family. Through losing weight, getting the right amount of exercise and controlling your diet, you can manage. If Type 2 diabetes is not treated, eventually the same complications may ensue as those seen with Type 1 diabetes.
Gestational diabetes is seen in pregnant women. Normally it disappears after the birth of the baby, however, treatment for the mother to stabilize the blood glucose levels will decrease the chance of complications to the baby as well as mother.
Juvenile Onset diabetes is another major form of diabetes that affects many children. It is believed to be the onset of Type 1 diabetes. If a child is showing even a few of the symptoms of diabetes, it’s vital that they be checked by a doctor. It is estimated that over two million adolescents are in the pre-diabetes stage. This is mostly due to being overweight. In this condition, blood glucose levels are high but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Teens usually develop this between the ages of 12 and 19.
