Compared To Regular Grocery Stores, What Are The Prices Like At Places Like Whole Foods Market?
ByI want to start feeding my family better food but with the gas prices lately I am unsure about exactly how much more I can spend weekly on groceries. A new Whole Foods Market just opened in our neighborhood but I have never been. Wondering how the prices stack up against regular grocery stores? I know it will be more, you get what you pay for, but am wondering how MUCH more? Anyone know?

Whole Foods is more expensive that regular grocery stores. However they have great foods that are ready to eat. Go check it out it maybe just what you want.

Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s tend to cater to the really busy folks who have more $$ than time with a lot of foods that are already prepared or can be put together quickly. You pay a premium for the convenience. I’d say buy your bulk items and dry goods at a lower end store. Beans, flour, butter, oil & cleaning supplies. Try to hit the Farmer’s market once a week for fresh fruits & veggies. Use Whole Foods $$$ as a substitute for buying take- out like pizza or ending up at the window of a fast food place. I wouldn’t do my main shopping there. All in all I’d say you’d probably be paying 10 to 15 % more at Whole Foods or a Wild Oats……….

Contrary to what you may hear from people, including ones on Yahoo Answers, some stuff at Whole Foods, has some stuff for about the same price or not much more than other supermarkets. And believe it or not, sometimes the stuff you see in regular supermarkets in their “organic” section, etc. is sometimes CHEAPER at Whole Foods, or not much more. I have bought rice milk a lot from Whole Foods, and it’s a brand called Rice Dream. Believe it or not, it was cheaper there than at a couple other stores near me. Of course some stuff is gonna cost more, and yeah you usually get what you pay for in almost any situation. But not always, so be careful. haha.
But I also wanted to say, they have stuff that IS NOT already made or quick to put together. Such as uncooked chicken breast, ground beef, etc. For stuff like that, I think it’s worth paying the little extra for the fact it’s meat without antibiotics, hormones, and even pesticide residue if it’s labeled “organic.” Personally I think their meat in general tastes better compared to well known brands like Perdue, even though I like that brand as well.
In a way I think Whole Foods is a gimmick, but on the other hand I think it’s great to eat meat without any antibiotics, hormones, or pesticide residue, for example. I just think some stuff they make way too much of a big deal about. For example, not selling ANYTHING with preservatives. Or, not selling anything with artificial colors, which I don’t think are as bad as some people make them out to be. Some stuff though is a straight up rip off if you ask me. For example, certain imported cheese for like 18-20 bucks a pound. That is ridiculous to me.
For all of their organic fruits/veggies, I think that stuff is a great reason to go there. Or for people like me with Crohn’s disease who can’t tolerate too many fruits/veggies in general in whole form, they have a good selection of fruit/veggie juices. Anyway, the best thing to do other than research/ask people online about it, is to just go to this one that opened near you, and see what you think.
I don’t know if this is a nationwide thing either, but the one near me recently stopped using plastic bags, which is kind of stupid to me. It’s for environmental reasons, but that’s one thing I think they make too big of a deal about. Funny you won’t see them suddenly stop carrying all the drinks, containers, etc. made with plastic. haha. Maybe plastic bags are a different kind of plastic, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the other stuff they sell made with plastic could be considered “environmentally bad” or whatever. haha.
OK, this is getting pretty long. Speaking of high prices, yeah the gas prices right now are RIDICULOUS! I sure hope they go down soon, and I’m sure many Americans feel the same way lately.
PS — to the one person above me, you’re right in saying they have a lot of stuff that’s already made, and some of it is a rip off as well in my opinion, like this 18 dollar a pound salmon thing that’s already cooked, and tastes good, but certainly way too expensive for that if you ask me, and I tried it before and bought like 1/4 pound. haha.
Their deli (at least the one near me) is decent too, but I got sliced turkey there once and I thought it made me feel worse but I could be wrong. I have Crohn’s disease, so stuff that might not bother someone else could easily bother me. And taste wise, I prefer Boar’s Head meat or other brands over theirs. Even though their deli stuff is good. Wow, this answer is long. I hope this helps thousands of people. haha.
